The word “personalization” gets thrown around A LOT today by businesses.
However, very few articles provide a granular, concrete understanding of what personalization looks like.
Personalization borne from attention to detail.
That is the goal of this article.
Starting with the definition of attention to detail.
Attention to detail (ATD) is:
- SUBTLE.
- COVERT.
- GENTLE
- and
- nearly IMPERCEPTIBLE
Thus— it’s HARD to study.
Just like Big Foot!

If Attention to detail is SUBTLE, COVERT, GENTLE AND IMPERCEPTIVE…
How Do You Study Attention To Detail?
Listen the guy who trained legendary NBA star Michael Jordan, Tim Grover.
So you can directly translate his insights to your business!
Attention-To-Detail: A MasterClass by Tim Grover
In a recent GQ interview, Tim details his approach to training for some the most prolific athletes in the world.
Tim Grover is the legendary trainer behind athletes such as:
- Michael Jordan
- Kobe Bryant
- Dwayne Wade
[NOTE: Tim’s first intern, Mike Mancias, is Lebron James’ long-term trainer.]
What makes Tim’s approach unique from the rest?
Tim’s approach is methodical attention-to-detail.
Where he is willing to tear down the athlete back to fundamentals and build them back up again.
Piece-by-piece.
As evidence by the following…
Data Analytics Before Data Analytics
“I would literally write down how many steps he [Michael Jordan] took EVERY SINGLE BASKETBALL GAME.”
tim Grover
If you look in a game that they have a tendency to pull 50% more to the right and only 20% to the left. Well if you are going equal distance when the training, it’s not going to correlate to the court.
He would go SO much more in one direction, you didn’t want to overuse that side.
“This is how many steps he took in the first quarter.” This is how many in the second. How many he took left. How many he took to the right. Forward. Back. So that way I could understand WHICH body part and which angle he used most? Which one he used less.
You are not going to take a superstar who’s that good an increase their abilities by 10%, they are looking for that 1% of how can I get better.
Tim was calculating thousands of data points—BY HAND!
BEFORE the help of modern analytics.
- EACH NIGHT!
- For an 82 Game basketball season.
- FOR YEARS!
His obsessive attention to detail allowed him to PINPOINT Michael’s needs.
TAILOR the program DIRECTLY FOR HIM.
To give MJ that 1% edge.
That Is What Personalization Looks Like
Tim is put the ”PERSONAL“ in Personal trainer.
Your goal is the same.
When you understand you clients nuances and needs just like Tim understood Michael.
That’s how you keep a:
- client FOR LIFE!
- Relationship FOR LIFE
- Success FOR LIFE
As a result of no turnover… you keep more profit!
You MAKE MORE MONEY!
ESPECIALLY if you are looking for an edge against your competition.
The SUBTLETY and FINESSE combined with POWER, will put you in a category of your own!
Lesson: The right attention to detail create a SEAMLESS experience!
A lot of trainers come in an ask the client… “How do you feel?” “It’s your job to KNOW how the client feels.I had to record the games and get up early the next morning and watch them BEFORE I could see my client.”
Tim Grover
“You should have paid attention to:
- how many minutes he played
- how physical the game was
- whether they won or lost
- what kind of mental state this person is after a win
- what kind of mental state this person is in after a loss”
Tim understood his clients.
That’s why he got referrals.
For example: MJ referred Tim to Kobe after his final season with the Washington Wizards.
He anticipated their needs and tailored their programs.
Use the example of attention to detail above to help you improve you game and your standards.
