Listen to me walk through the mistakes:
Mistake #1: Free Material Is NOT their best material.
Most experts their book is NOT their best material.
It’s an upsell.
You read the book cover to cover.
Implement everything BUT you still don’t get where you want to go.
You are left “wanting more.”
I’m here to pull back the curtain and say That is BY DESIGN!
It’s important for you to understand the persons incentive structure BEFORE you make a decision.
What you are REALLY looking for is:
Is this person’s success aligned with MY personal success?
Asking this question is CRITICAL THINKING!
Critical thinking is a HUGE part of Personal Development & Personal Success!
Mistake #2: Outdated books
Their books are outdated.
There are SOME books that are timeless classics.
But remember, it’s few and far between to read timeless classics.
Typically, it takes A LONG time for a book to “get to market.”
Mistake #3: Not finding content that builds YOU up
Personal development work It’s to build YOU up.
I know it SOUNDS obvious.
But it’s SO easy to lose sight of this when you are reading content.
Since:
llYou can read A LOT of content that A) Leaves you feeling empty B) Leaves you feeling broken
Especially, when you actually started reading the material for a SOLUTION.
Gasp! What a shock.
Ditch that information. ASAP!
If it isn’t helping you move forward, you move on!
It’s that simple.
It’s that easy.
Mistake #4: Not using the focusing question
The focusing question that you scrub ANY personal development material through is:
Is this IMPROVING my life?
That’s it.
If YES:
Then continue on course.
If NO:
Then stop. Do something else until it works.
Mistake #5: Not Diving into the areas where you are strong & where you are weak
Personal development is NOT about reading the next book or going to the next seminar.
It’s about USING that information to help you GROW.
Grow in areas that:
- you are already strong—and make you STRONGER.
- you are weak and remove the risk of catastrophic failure. (aka stabilization.)
[MUSTAFA NOTE: If you want to learn more about the power of stabilization and how it removes systemic risk Check out my thoughts here.]
Well in order to have that growth, you MUST self-diagnose WHERE you must grow.
- Avoiding sending emails because they’re too “emotionally draining”? That’s your growth area. Not the NEXT Book.
The idea is each piece of material you consume should stratgically fulfill your needs.
Typical people just consume the information and say: “I should implement this.”
But it’s just not relevant to them.
INSTEAD you are READING the next book/article/podcast to SOLVE that problem.
NOT collecting information for some rainy day.
